PARIS -- France will send about 300 troops, members of the Besancon armoured brigade, to Kosovo and Metohija later in the week to join the U.N. peacekeeping force KFOR, military sources said.
The troops are to replace members of the Orleans armoured brigade stationed in the Kosovska Mitrovica zone, in the north of the Yugoslav republic of Serbia's southern province.
Their task is to ensure the population's safety and economic recovery in the zone to which they are to be deployed, the same sources said.
KFOR's Sector North is under command by Gen. Bruno Cuche of France. As many as 5,300 French troops are stationed in the zone as well as 1,000 troops from the United Arab Emirates, 900 from Belgium, 900 from Denmark and 380 from Russia.
France has a 900-strong contigent also in Macedonia.
