BUCHAREST -- The Voice of America Serbian-language broadcasts aired from Romania are illegal in spite of government approval, as the radio did not get the necessary broadcasting license from the National Council for Radio and Television, the influential Romanian daily Adevarul said on Sunday.
Adevarul said Serbian-language shows by the BBC, Radio Free Europe, Radio France International, and Deutsche Welle were broadcast on the same frequency. All these programs are aimed against official Belgrade, the daily said.
Romania's National Council for Radio and Television on May 5 rejected a request by Voice of America to broadcast a program from Romanian territory. However, on May 21, the cabinet of Prime Minister Radu Vasile gave permission to this radio station to operate in Romania, and the foreign ministry played a big role in the adoption of such a decision.
In addition to this engagement in the propaganda war against Yugoslavia, the Romanian authorities firmly supported the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia last spring and applied all anti-Serb measures launched by the west.
