TIRANA, Albania (AP) -- American financier-philanthropist George Soros promised Friday to donate money to rebuild destroyed schools and print textbooks for children in the neighboring Yugoslav province of Kosovo.
The Hungarian-born Soros, who arrived to Tirana on Thursday, said he would be traveling on to Kosovo to discuss the project.
The billionaire has been funding a similar project in Albania.
The Albanian government has strongly supported a proposal by Soros to establish a free-trade zone in southern Europe, which would include countries of former Yugoslavia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova.
``We'll have a new vision for this region,'' Soros told reporters in Tirana. ``This is the only way to avoid conflicts.''
