BELGRADE, Yugoslavia, Sept. 10 (UPI) Romania has blocked Yugoslav shipping in its section of the Danube River and banned other Yugoslav ships from entering its inland territorial waters in retaliation for similar measures taken against it by Yugoslavia, the Belgrade newspaper Blic reported.
Six Yugoslav barges, one tugboat and six other ships have been blocked, the paper quoted Romanian Transport Minister Trayan Basescu as saying.
Basescu also announced that the Romanian section of the Danube was out of bounds to Yugoslav ships.
These measures reflect Bucharest's displeasure at Yugoslavia keeping Romanian shipping blocked in its own section of the Danube ever since some bridges on the river were brought down by NATO's bombing, but permitting Russian and Ukrainian ship to pass through along a side canal.
Romania sided with NATO during its 11-week war against Yugoslavia.
In protest against the Yugoslav action, Romanian shippers had blocked the Danube for three days, ending the blockade in the past 24 hours, Blic reported.
Bulgaria hinted it may introduce the same measures against Belgrade, the paper said.
