BUDAPEST -- Members of the Danube Commission gave a positive evaluation of a Yugoslav memorandum on possibilities for re-establishing traffic along the Danube in Budapest on Wednesday.
It was concluded at a commission meeting which ended here today that the offered document on unhindered navigation and the construction of bridges, earlier sent to the commission member-states, presented an objective and argumented picture of the actual state of affairs in the Yugoslav section of the Danube. The document will definitely considerably contribute to removing the consequences of the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia, it was heard.
During the debate, it was pointed out that Danube countries have so far lost at least 200 million dollars because of the suspended navigation along this river, and that just half that sum would be sufficient to remove the rubble of the destroyed bridges and build new ones.
A large number of participants urged that the Danube Commission be more resolute in its demands for the soonest possible start of realization of these projects. The commission expanded the mandate of an expert team which is entrusted with proposing manners of finacing the necessary works by Oct 5.
