PRISTINA (Reuters) - Unidentified attackers destroyed a Serb school chapel in southern Kosovo by exploding five antitank mines, the KFOR peacekeeping force said Tuesday.

KFOR said the incident had occurred late Monday night in Prizren, Kosovo's second largest city. No one was wounded in the attack, the international peacekeeping force said.

Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries across Kosovo have been the target of arson and explosives attacks over the past few months and KFOR has placed many under permanent guard.

Church leaders have accused ethnic Albanians, who make up the vast majority of the population, of attacking the churches as part of an attempt to force the Serb minority out of Kosovo.

French soldiers foiled an attempt to set fire to one church in the northern town of Vucitrn early Tuesday morning, KFOR spokesman Major Roland Lavoie said.

A French master sergeant found a man trying to set fire to the church. The arsonist shot at the soldier, slightly injuring him in the right thigh, before fleeing.

"A platoon was deployed to protect the church and KFOR firefighters extinguished the fire," Lavoie said in his daily update of incidents across Kosovo. "The church was only slightly damaged and military police are continuing the investigation."

Other incidents showed Serbs themselves continue to be the target of attacks.

A Russian KFOR patrol had found a Serb man shot dead on his tractor near Ajinovic in eastern Kosovo Monday, Lavoie said. In western Kosovo, near the city of Pec, a grenade was thrown at a Serb house on the same day. No one was injured.
