BRUSSELS -- The foreign ministers of the E.U. member states accused on Saturday the ethnic Albanian terrorist organisation calling itself Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) of being responsible for numerous cases of violence in Kosovo and Metohija.
In a meeting that opened at Finland's resort of Saariselka, the ministers voiced grave concern about the eruption of organised crime in the Yugoslav republic of Serbia's southern province and Albania.
They called on KLA to put an end to violence in the province and strictly honour the deadline for its disarming expiring on Sept. 19.
We must clearly state that KLA is directly or indirectly responsible for a large number of cases of violence in Kosovo and Metohija, Spanish Foreign Minister Abel Matutes said at the end of the first day of the meeting's work.
A Finnish Foreign Ministry spokesman spoke of a drastic rise in crime in Kosovo and Metohija and Albania at a news conference held Saturday. The ministers urged the U.N. peacekeeping force in the province KFOR to tighten border control towards Albania.
In a debate held behind closed doors, the ministers made it clear that Albanian authorities must take all necessary measures against organised gangs, stressing that this was a precondition of Tirana's cooperation with Western countries, it was stated at the news conference.
