NEW YORK -- Yugoslavia has requested the U.N. Security Council to instruct the U.N. civilian mission to Kosovo- Metohija (UNMIK) to adhere to its mandate under U.N. Resolution 1244 and not to violate accords and the law by usurping public and state property in that province of the Yugoslav republic of Serbia.
The Yugoslav government has made the request in a letter sent by the chief of the Yugoslav mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Vladislav Jovanovic, to the president of the U.N. Security Council, Ambassador Peter Van Valsam of the Netherlands.
The letter, published as an official document at U.N. headquarters in New York on Thursday, draws the member-states' attention to UNMIK's increasingly frequent usurpation of public and state property - buildings, cars, etc.
In this way, UNMIK goes against its mandate and against the prevalent norms and international law, as well as against Resolution 1244 which clearly specifies its mandate, rights and obligations, the letter says.
Yugoslavia asks that the unlawfully seized property be returned to its rightful owners, and that the U.N. Security Council notify UNMIK to refrain from this practice in the future and not to abuse its office.
