BELGRADE, Yugoslavia, Sept. 3 (UPI) The chief of the U.N. mission in Kosovo has signed a decree that clears the way for his administration to use the German mark as its official currency.
Belgrade Radio B2-92 today quoted another U.N. official as saying the Yugoslav dinar will also be permitted for transactions in the province, although its use won't be encouraged.
The move by the U.N.'s Bernard Kouchner allows transactions with currency that is already in circulation in the province. A U.N. statement said the rate of the dinar will be fixed in line with its value on the market.
Meanwhile, the customs service organized by the U.N. in Kosovo was due to begin work at the Djeneral Jankovic border crossing point between Kosovo and Macedonia on Friday, B2-92 said.
Customs dues will be levied in German marks and the funds accrued will go into Kosovo's budget, the station said.
International police also cordoned off the center of the Kosovo capital Pristina today after discovering unexploded grenades in the vicinity of United Nations headquarters, B2-92 reported.
Despite the U.N. intervention in the wake of NATO's offensive against the Yugoslav crackdown in Kosovo, it is still technically a province of Serbia, Yugoslavia's dominant republic.
