The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) main board held a session Tuesday chaired by Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, discussed the current political and economic situation and defined the future party tasks, the main board press service said in a statement.

Yugoslavia has defended itself from the aggression by the biggest power the world has ever seen through tremendous self-sacrifices, courage and unity of the people, the army, the police and the state leadership, the statement says.

The aggressors know they have committed a crime against the people of Yugoslavia and are now attempting to conceal the crime and transfer responsibility to the heroes of national defense, the statement says.

As the aggressors did not achieve their goal of enslaving Yugoslavia by bombs, they are now attempting to do so by helping puppet political parties and corrupt leaders, the statement says.

Our goal is to use economic policy measures to reconstruct the country and alleviate the consequences of the aggression, to ensure economic and social security of the people and to pursue reforms aimed at a better life for all, the statement says.

The main board fully endorses the Serbian government's economic policy goals and measures for the second semester of 1999, whose priorities are the speediest possible national recovery, laying conditions for reviving production, an active social policy and pursuing reforms in order to create an encouraging market environment, the statement says.

The SPS gives priority to efficient functioning of all state bodies, the statement says.

The main board pointed to the need for pursuing the process of political and organisational strengthening of the SPS, its membership and its activities, the statement says.

The main board elected as its new members Zoran Arandjelovic and Branimir Djordjevic from Nis, Dragan Nikolic from Belgrade and Dragan Markovic from Pristina, and new members of its executive committee are Zoran Arandjelovic and Zivorad Igic, President of the SPS Kosovo-Metohija Committee.

The opening addresses were made by SPS Secretary-General Gorica Gajevic and executive committee member and Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Marjanovic, the statement says.
