artist: cp3 album: We Came to Rap label: dead baby records rating: * * * * * cp3 is the newest emerging rap group from the detroit area. their debut release on dead baby records, "We Came to Rap" is already turning heads. i know what you're thinking, "another one?" the difference here? cp3 has something to say. with emotionally charged tracks such as "AAronGay" proclaiming, "my name's aaron/oh/oh/yo/" it's easy to see these youngsters have got it together. don't think this duo has lost touch with their fun side though. their playful slam towards the video game world "VideoGames lame" proves otherwise. "video games, thats so lame/you go into the hall of fame/that's more like the hall of shame," snarls c-rey, corey haskins' rap alter ego. the track that seems to stand out among the rest, however, is the sensitive jam "pink jell0." "pink jello, you're my favorite fellow/i'd rather eat you that drink some mellow yellow," flows from haskins' lips. with lines like these, it's easy to see this young man has been given the gift of rap. this sensitive ballad is not without edge though. "i just sit there in my underwear/you think i care? NO!/i'll do it anyway." belts c-rey in a firm voice. all-in-all, "We Came to Rap" is on my list for the must-have summer albums of 2003. it's difficult to find a downside, let's just hope cp3 can keep up this pace for their sophomore release.
