chapter 5
You were only playing, you were only playing with my heart
I was never waiting, I was never waiting for the tears to start
It was you, who put the clouds around me
It was you, who made the tears fall down
It was you, who broke my heart in pieces
It was you, it was you, who made my
Blue eyes blue

Kelsey sat back in her chair singing quietly to herself, done with her work for the day and sipping a mug of french vanilla tea as she flipped through a notebook filled with sheet music and lyric ideas.  She was still stuck on the bridge of her Miss Independent song.

Breaking Benjamin had left the studio about a half an hour prior, excited about the progress they had made on their album, and happy with the job that Kelsey had done.  She had managed to finish recording the last parts of the song and mixing it with minimal difficulty, even though she was clearly distracted.  At one point, the lead singer, Ben, pulled Kelsey outside the studio and asked her what was wrong; he had met her when she was a teenager through one of their old roadies, and they had been friends since, and Ben knew all of her moods and what usually put her into them.  She denied anything having to do with any of the guys on the Penguins, which was Bens first guess, and for some reason he had actually believed her and took her excuse of having a headache without any arguments.

She was leaning back in her chair, her shoes were sitting on the floor near the door and her feet were resting on the recording console she had worked on for the past five years; she could operate the machine in her sleep at that point.  She had thrown in the Runaway Bride soundtrack in all attempts to relax herself before she went home to deal with Lisa and her surprise, and at the moment, Eric Claptons Blue Eyes Blue was playing softly through the studios speakers.

Every time the phrase blue eyes blue was heard throughout the song, Kelseys thoughts drifted to Brooks; he had the brightest pair of baby blue eyes she had ever seen, and that was one of the many things she loved about him.  She had a weakness for blue eyes and nice arms, and Brooks had an impressive set of both.  She was attracted to him, and had liked him since they met, but she was always too busy with work to even see him more than once or twice in a two week span.  And when they did hang out, she never even dared to let him know that she was even remotely interested in him, mostly because the extent of their relationship was harmless flirting.

But its not harmless anymore, She thought.  What exactly was that?  Brooksey wouldnt do something like that.  Hell, I dont have good enough luck to have something like that happen to me, not after Ive liked the guy for so long.  I mustve imagined the whole thing, then.  It certainly didnt seem real.  If Brooksey had wanted me for a year and a half, then he wouldve said something by now.

She sighed and glanced at her watch, seeing the digital numbers read 6:05PM.  She had promised Lisa that she would be home by six, and as much as she would rather skip the surprise that Lisa was sure to shove down her throat the second she walked in the door, she was a woman of her word.

She noticed an unfamiliar car where Matt usually parked his Yukon; upon closer inspection when Kelsey got out of her car, she found that it was a Chevy Malibu.  She shrugged it off, not thinking much of it, and walked to the door, struggling with her bag.  She had shoved extra sheet music papers and all of Breaking Benjamins tracking sheets into it, and they were threatening to spill out of the side pocket as she struggled to unlock the front door.  Suddenly, the door opened and Kelsey looked up, alarmed to see a guy she had never met before standing in her doorway.  Most of the papers went flying out of the pocket and scattered around the front porch.

Im sorry, the guy muttered, bending over to help Kelsey pick up the papers.  I didnt mean to scare you.

Its okay, Kelsey said, reaching for the same track sheet that Mystery Man was grabbing at.

Their fingers brushed, and they both looked up at the same time, their eyes meeting.  Kelseys breath caught in her throat when she took a good look at him.  His eyes were the same shade of baby blue that Brooks were.  Kelsey nearly got lost in them when he began to give her an adorable half smile, but she caught herself quickly.  Why exactly are you at my house? she asked, unlocking her eyes from his and reaching for more papers.

Im new, he replied.  Matt mentioned something about wanting me to meet someone named Kelsey.

That would be me, Kelsey replied, standing up after grabbing the last of her paperwork.  So  Who are you? she asked, taking the papers from his hand.

Oh, he said, giving a small laugh.  Im Kris.  Kris Beech.  He smiled as Kelsey nodded.  Here, he said, holding the door open for her.

Thanks, she muttered, walking into the living room to see Matt and Lisa sitting on the couch, smiling.  She sighed.  Yeah, Matt mentioned something about meeting a Kris Beech to me last night, she said, giving Matt her Annoyed look.  She turned to Kris.  If youll excuse me, I have to get rid of this stuff, she said, motioning toward the papers in her hands by pointing with her chin.  And Lisa has to help me, she said, turning around.  Well be right back.

Lisa followed Kelsey to her room, shutting the door behind them while Kelsey dumped the paperwork on her bed.  So? Lisa asked excitedly, taking a seat at Kelseys computer desk.

Kelsey had her back turned to Lisa, pretending to sort through the papers.  So what? she asked, trying to play the innocent card.

Lisa made a snorting noise from behind her.  So do you think hes cute, or what?

Kelsey still had her back turned.  You want the truth?

Of course I do.

Kelsey spun around, a grin encompassing her face.  I think hes gorgeous, can I keep him?

Lisa laughed.  I think thats up to him, she said, smiling.  But Im pretty sure he wouldnt mind.  Hes staying with Matt for the time being.  She paused while Kelsey smiled, staring off into space.  So do you have work tomorrow?

Kelseys smile disappeared.  I have to mix Breaking Benjamins new album, she said, frowning.  But Ill make it a point to get home early if you want to hang out with Matt and Kris or something, she said hopefully.

Lisa laughed.  They have a game tomorrow, and I have tickets.  Were going, be home by five-thirty.

Willdo, she said, walking toward the door with Lisa.

Lisa put a hand up to stop Kelsey when she heard Matt and Kris talking from the top of the stairs.  She held a finger up to her mouth, signaling for Kelsey to be quiet so they could hear the boys conversation.

Shes cute, Kris was saying.  Kelseys eyes lit up, and she had to suppress a squeal.

Yeah, Matt replied.  Were trying to hook her up with someone, you wanna go out with her?

Sure, Kris said, making the smile on his face apparent through his one-word answer.

Kelsey smiled, then realized what Matt had said.  Hook me up? Kelsey whispered, frowning and crossing her arms over her chest.

You know what he meant, Lisa said, rolling her eyes.  We never see you, and how long have you been single?

Kelsey frowned.  Good point, she whispered.

Lisa nodded and began walking down the stairs, hearing all she needed to hear.  Hello, boys, she said, taking a seat on a free chair.

Kelsey froze when she saw the seating arrangement.  Matt was on a chair, Lisa was on a chair and Kris was sitting on the couch, by himself.  She shook her head and took the spot next to Kris; Lisa and Matt had obviously been planning this.

So are you going to the game tomorrow? Kris asked when Kelsey sat next to him.

Apparently I am, she said, glancing at Lisa.  Thisll be my first hockey game.

Really? Kris asked.  Youve never been to one before? he asked, turning sideways in his spot so he was facing Kelsey.

Nope, Kelsey replied, shifting in her spot and tucking one leg under her so she was facing Kris.  Ive always been too busy with work.

Kris nodded.  What do you do?

Matt laughed.  Beechie, what CD were we listening to on the way here? he asked.

Kris appeared to be confused.  Umm, 3 Doors Down, right?

Matt nodded.  She engineered that CD.

Kriss eyes suddenly widened.  Really?  You did? he asked, smiling.  Kelsey nodded in return.  Thats so cool.  So youre an engineer?

Yeah, she said.  Im a Mix Engineer, I usually do all the mixing for albums.  Right now, Im finishing up Breaking Benjamins new CD, thats what all those papers were for that I dropped before.

Thats so cool, Kris said, smiling.  I love Breaking Benjamin, could you maybe bring a CD in after the game for me?

I dunno, Kelsey said, returning Kriss smile.  I can only do that certain people, she said flirtly.

Awe, come on, Kris said, flirting right back by reaching out and taking her hand, which was resting in between them.  For me? he asked, giving her a puppy dog expression.

Kelsey laughed.  Maybe, she said, not making any moves to remove her hand from his.

Lisa took note of what was happening, and gave Matt a look of approval.  They both excused themselves while Kelsey and Kris were talking, and headed to the kitchen.  Theyre adorable, Lisa gushed, glancing into the living room, where Kris was tucking a stray strand of Kelseys hair behind her ear.  This is perfect.

Matt smiled.  I know.  Now, all we have to do is get Kel to understand why Kris isnt on the ice for the entire game tomorrow, he pointed out.  Do us all a favor and try and explain the game to her as much as you can, okay?  Shes still hockey illiterate.

Ill teach her by tomorrow.  Ill have to remember to explain to her that Kris is in the penalty box so often because he has a tendency to take stupid penalties.

True, Matt agreed.  But every time Im in there, just call the ref an idiot, no matter if what I did was legal or not.

Lisa laughed.  You know I will, she said, giving Matt a quick kiss on the cheek before they walked back into the living room.
