chapter 3
That girl has got to stop working so hard, Toby announced as he made his way down the basement stairs.

Shes finally home? Lisa asked from her spot perched on a stool at the minibar in the corner of the room.  Took her long enough, what the hell was she doing?

She mentioned something about Breaking Benjamin for tomorrows agenda, Toby said, watching Matt take a shot at the two ball.  It missed.  So Im assuming she worked with them today, but I could be wrong.

Shes been there since one in the afternoon, Lisa said, shaking her head as she watched Eric scratch on his shot.  We need to hook her up with someone, shes been spending too much time there alone.  I hardly ever see her anymore, and I live with her.

Wouldnt hooking her up with someone keep her away from you even more? Rob pointed out.

Lisa smiled slyly.  Not if he were one of you guys.

Eric and Tom suddenly froze and looked at each other.  At the same time, they started walking over to where their jackets were sitting on a couch and said, Its getting late, we should go.

Lisa opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted by Toby raising his hands and shaking his head.  I have a girlfriend, he said quickly.

So do I, Rob said, defending himself.

Before Lisa could get her sentence out, Brooks suddenly muttered, Im single.  Err, I, um, have to go now-

Knock it off, Lisa interjected, looking to Eric and Tom, who each had an arm in a sleeve of their jackets.  You two arent going anywhere, she said, pointing at them.  I didnt mean one of you guys, I meant someone else on the team.  She looked to Brooks.  And why wouldnt you go out with her, hum?  What, shes not a model, so shes not good enough for you?

No, no, Brooks said quickly.  He paused and squirmed in his seat, giving Lisa a small shrug.  Its not that I wouldnt go out with her, shes gorgeous  Its just that  Ive known her for so long, it would be weird.

Lisa nodded in approval, and the room got quiet; the guys were all thinking of who they could set up with their friend.  One of the guys on the team, Toby muttered slowly after a minute.  His eyes suddenly lit up.  How about Beechie? he suggested.  He looked at Lisa.  He just got called up, would she like him?

Lisa bit her bottom lip and thought for a moment.  Im pretty sure she would, hes a nice guy.  She paused and smiled.  Hes cute, too.

Matt raised his brows and walked over to Lisa, putting his arms around her waist from behind.  Not as cute as me though, right? he asked, giving her a quick kiss on the cheek.

Lisa smiled.  Of course not, she replied, returning the favor by kissing him quickly on the lips.

I think thats our cue to leave, Toby announced, grabbing his jacket.  It is late and heaven forbid were witnesses to one of their little cute scenes  Well hook up Kel and Beechie tomorrow.  Gnite guys, see you tomorrow.

Are you eating my lo mein?

Matt looked up from the forkful of noodles he was about to put in his mouth and froze.  Not anymore, he mumbled, handing Kelsey the white container.

Thank you, she said, hopping up to sit on the counter.  Wheres Lisa and the guys?  I dont hear music coming from the basement.

The guys went home, Lisas sleeping upstairs.  Im not tired, but she is, go figure.

I see.  Kelsey watched as Matt opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of Labatt Blue.  Sure, Matt, help yourself, she commented as Matt jumped up to sit next to her.

I do, he said, opening the bottle and taking a quick swig.  So whyre you awake at 3AM anyway?  I thought you were sleeping an hour ago.

I was, Kelsey began, twirling her fork around the cold noodles.  But I couldnt sleep because my stomach was yelling at me, and I realized I didnt eat dinner.

You mean in the twelve hours that youve been at the studio, you completely forgot to eat dinner? Matt asked, his question dripping with sarcasm.  Im surprised you didnt forget to breathe, with how busy youve been lately.

You think youre funny, Kelsey said, elbowing Matt softly in the ribs.  Stick to your day job, buddy.  You skate, you cant tell jokes.  Face it.  She paused while Matt laughed.  Hey, gimme a sip of that, she said, reaching for the bottle.

Gimme a bite of that, Matt said, holding the bottle away from Kelseys grasp.

Theres sweet and sour chicken in there, I got it for Lisa but I forgot that she didnt like Chinese food.  You might as well eat it, cause she sure as hell isnt gonna, and I lost my taste for it.  She smiled when she saw Matts eyes light up as he jumped off of his spot on the counter, and began digging around in the fridge.  Grab me a beer while youre at it.

Yes, master, Matt said, handing her a bottle.

Matt, youre hockey player, not a comedian, Kelsey said, shaking her head.

I know.  Speaking of hockey, arent you ever gonna come to one of our games? he asked, jumping back onto the counter and digging into the chicken.

Kelsey swallowed the lo mein she had just put in her mouth.  Matt, I told you, Im booked solid from now until May.  She paused while Matt made a face.  The only way Ill make it to a game is if I have a short day or someone cancels on me.  Or if you guys make the playoffs, when is that?

Thats in May, youll make it to those games, Matt said confidently.  Well be in the playoffs.  He suddenly grinned.  With the new guy we just got from Wilkes-Barre, well definitely make it to the playoffs.

Kelsey cocked her head to the side.  What new guy? she asked.  When did you get a new guy?

Couple days ago, didnt I tell you? Matt asked, the grin still present on his face.  Kris Beech.  Good guy, hes a utility forward, plays a great offensive and defensive game.  Matt noticed the look of confusion wash over Kelseys face.  Sorry, I forgot that youve never been to a hockey game before.  He can play any forward position well, right, left or center, and he can get the puck to the other teams zone and keep it there.

Kelsey nodded.  Thats cool, maybe hell win you guys some games.  She suddenly jumped off the counter and opened the fridge to put away the remains of her lo mein.  Im gonna get back to sleep, I have a semi-early day tomorrow and no offense, but chatting with my best friends boyfriend is cutting into my beauty sleep.

Dont you wanna hear about Kris? Matt asked, jumping down from his spot on the counter.

Kelsey yawned.  Matt, I really am tired, and I-

Hes six foot two, blue eyes, brown hair.

Kelsey paused and raised an eyebrow.  You just described half the guys on the team, Kelsey pointed out.

Well theres a difference between him and them, Matt said, getting frustrated with Kelseys sarcasm.  I think youd actually like him.  Matt paused and shook his head.  Yeah, you would definitely like him.

Kelsey sighed.  Thats great, Matty.  Can I go to sleep now or would you like to tell me this guys measurements?  Maybe his middle name, or the name of his dog back home in Canada?

Howd you know he was from Canada? Matt asked.

Because damn near all of you are from Canada, Kelsey replied, rolling her eyes.  Im going to sleep, tell me about him tomorrow, okay?

Matt sighed.  Alright, tomorrow.  Goodnight, Kel.

Night, Matt.
