Realistic Mapping for the Quake III Engine
Current game engines do not provide realism in gaming.  This is mostly because historically, everything had to be exaggerated in order have a feeling of 3-D space.   In particular the textures had to be busy in order to get that 3-D feeling without a light map.    In addition the perspective has also been exaggerated for the same reasons.

The advanced lighting of the Quake III engine makes it possible to provide that 3D feeling with textures which are more realistic albeit not necessarily interesting. There have also been significant constraints based on the fact that the computers hardware can only render so many polygons at one time.   Recent 3-D hardware improvements like the GeForce processor means that these constraints whole still important are not nearly as limiting as they were when I made my first map for Doom.

This is a new Web site and so far I have only a few pictures which are of topical interest. In the near future I will post screen shots of my current project which is an interesting but real building.   I will try to compare and contrast what the game can be made to do with real photos.

My next project  is Les Invalides in Paris which is now Napolean's tomb. This is an excellent example of arcade courtyards and 18th century arches.  This type of architecture is found throughout Europe.  This particular place struck me as a great place to play capture the cannon flag.
