~SORTING~
 Tom ([email protected])

Up into the attic I did go,
for a sorting I was doing.
Cleaning up and cleaning out,
things from the old homestead.
And the first thing I saw was an old trunk
which had been my moms.
I opened that old steamer trunk,
which was covered with a lot of dust.
And then with a paper clip, I did it unlock.
I opened it up, for it had been here all my life,
but she'd said, that is mine
and in it things I have.
So there on the top tray, an old and faded, oh yes,
was grandpas campaign hat from the First World War,
and poppas barrack's hat from World war two.
And three pairs of baby shoes, one of which had been mine.
A campaign button from 48, she did like Harry S.
And, oh me oh my, I did not believe this one.
An "I like Ike" ribbon from his first election.
And there was a picture of my great-grandpa,
a corporal in the confederate Army, 1863.
Two scrap books from when she was a teenager, I guess.
And then I lifted up the tray and smiled for
there was her wedding dress,
all yellow with age, and an orchid corsage.
A pair of high heel shoes
which were not the button kind.
And a packet of letters from a man I did not know,
wrapped in what had been a
piece of red ribbon.
And then there was a box, full of coins it was.
Quarters, nickels, dimes, pennies, and
some half dollars, too.
I smiled for there were a lot of coins,
worth a lot today.
I smiled and remembered when
we were so poor.
And then I thought a while,
thinking of the things I had found.
I slowly put them back
and locked the trunk,
And did think.
Some day I will go back
and open the trunk again, trying to
figure out the meaning of all the things in there.
And so down the stairs I did go and the light I did turn off.
And I did smile and grin a bit, thinking
'Wonder what my kids will think?
