A VALENTINE FOR MARY LOU
I bought a valentine for you
Mary Lou I bought you a valentine today
And it is a pretty one,
I bought you a valentine today,
but it cannot be sent
so I will just put it in my suit jacket pocket
and bring it to you real soon.
Mary Lou, oh it is a bright pink
With little cherubs all around
And when you open it up
There is a small pond.
And beneath is the verse
And it is just for you
And it just says,
Mary Lou I do love you.
For thirty five long years, each valentine's day
You would make me a devil's food cake
And only ice your half.
And I would as I recall, go by the dairy store
And buy a half-gallon of
Red Hart ice cream.
Then we would after supper sit and laugh and eat
And then snuggle up on the couch
And let our love shine forth.
Oh Mary Lou I do miss you, and wish you had not gone
But I know it was the best, for now no pain you do bear.
But why could it not have been me who got the thing
And then you would still be here
And I in the Promised Land.
Mary Lou my love, it won't be long,
Before we will be together again.
For old Doc has told me that the spot
Will take me too.
But I bought you a valentine but I don't think
I will put it in the mail,
I think I will just put it in my suit pocket and
Bring it to you this fall.
And oh Mary Lou, there are so many things
That I want to tell you,
But most of all I just want to say,
I bought you a valentine and
I still love you.
