Bob and I were coming home from the grocery store today and we were hit by a van. The van damaged our car and it's in a very bad condition. It just missed hitting the side where I was sitting.
Bob couldn't drive us home. A worker from the Jewel (the grocery store) came over and asked what he could do. He called the police from his cell phone and I didnt know what had happened. I was stunned and crying because I thought Bob was hurt, or dead. The van hit our rear wheel on driver's side and I didn't know know what happened. Perhaps I was knocked unconscious for a moment. As soon as I knew, I ran out and talked to the driver of the van, who was a man about Bob's age. I yelled and said, "Look what you have done." Bob stayed in the car, stunned. Two police cars came and parked in back of our car, and the police questioned us both. The man in the other car had only one leg and was on daily dialysis in his home. His wife got out and looked at the damage and was also stunned. We had a week's supply of groceries in the car and the policeman took the bags out of our car and put them in the trunk of the police car. He drove us home after I notified our insurance company of what had happened. The police officer, who was only twenty-three years old (I told him I was probably old enough to be his mother), brought our groceries in and gave me the report. He waited in our kitchen while I called the insurance company back to give them the information they needed. He was very kind indeed, probably going past the point he usually went. I thanked him and could have given him a hug and a kiss at that point, because he was very kind and helpful. When I said he was twenty-three I told him he could call me Grandma, as I had a granddaughter who was twenty-two. I was badly shaken and was having chest pains. They asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital and I said no I would probably be all right. There were many phone calls to make and we rented a car. A girl delivered the rental car and I told her the circumstances. Bob was to have dialysis the next morning and would he be able to drive the rented car, which was "silver"? We didn't pick the color, but it turned out to be a silver Dodge Neon. Bob would leave at 5am the next day and I will be a nervous wreck until everything is straightened out. I am full of pain and it was about eight hours ago that it happened. I don't know, but I feel that I have a guardian angel on my shoulder. I don't know how we came out of this accident with only some bruises and hurts in my muscles. Bob says he is okay. I feel very lucky in one way, but so sad that our new car of only seven months has $5,200 damage, and we won't get it back until around February 4th. Our insurance company pays for twenty days. We have $250 deductable. I feel like I still have the "guardian angel" that I had as a child. I wrote a story about her last year for the Writers' Corner and maybe you read it. I had my "guardian angel" then and I feel that she is still with Bob and I, watching over us.
