And Allah took a handful of southerly wind, blew His breath over it, and
created the Horse. . . . Thou shall fly without wings, and
conquer any sword.  Oh, Horse.

My dear Smokey-Man - you have been such a constant in my life when others came and went.
You came to us just short of 24 years ago, only recently gelded, foot sore, and barely halter broke.  My Diamond in the rough.  We got off to a rocky start the first year or two, but oh how you came to sparkle once we got our act together, and you became a brilliant Diamond.  You enriched the lives of friends through 4-H, the open circuit, and then the breed shows - along with all the fun times that a girl can only have with a favorite horse.

Thanks to you I made so many good friends along the road we traveled together.  You gave me many much needed lessons in patience, and taught me to have quiet and soft hands.  I could look into those beautiful blue eyes of yours and see straight into your soul.  You were one of few horses that truly showed affection towards people, not just for food but because you craved attention, always wanting to be petted or scratched.

Knowing those gorgeous blue eyes were closing for the final time was the most heart breaking thing I've ever experienced.  I am so grateful for all the good times and good rides.  I am honored that I was the one chosen to be your human.  They say that to have loved and lost is better than to never have loved at all, but it sure is painful.

You left us on Christmas Eve, a lovely time of the year, and because of that your friends and family, all of whom cared so much for you, were able to be with you.

Sleep well, My Friend.  We will always love you.
Somewhere in time's own space,
There must be some pastured place.
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some paradise where horses go,
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again.
