Actor in "Bonanza"

David Canary

Meet David Canary
David Canary Five-time Emmy Award-winning actor David Canary, who began his career on the Broadway stage and in Hollywood film and television productions, plays the powerful and mercurial Adam Chandler as well as Adam's shy, gentle twin, Stuart.
He was honored with Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal of Adam and Stuart Chandler in 1986, 1988, 1989, 1993 and 1995, and has received a nomination in 1997. "It's fun playing two roles," said David. "The roles provide a wonderful range of emotions. Stuart is childlike and sensitive. Adam is ruthless, outrageous. He's flamboyant. He does the unexpected."

David's youth
And David Canary often has done the unexpected. For example, he attended the University of Cincinnati on a football scholarship, played varsity ball throughout his college career and graduated as a music major specializing in voice in a unique university program that combined study at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. A native of Elwood, Indiana, he grew up in Massillon, Ohio, not far from the Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

David on Broadway
David went on to make his Broadway debut in Jose Quintero's production of "Great Day in the Morning," with Colleen Dewhurst. Then came a draft call from the U.S. Army and he entered and won the All Army Entertainment Contest for best popular singer. When David left the service, he restarted his career on the West Coast, starring in "The Fantasticks" in San Francisco. Then came television and movie roles.

David on television
Candy & the Cartwright Family Primetime television audiences know him as Candy in "Bonanza." In this western David Canary played ranch foreman Candy Canaday from 1968-1970. And then again from 1972-73.

Further we know David as Russ Gehring in "Peyton Place" and from numerous guest appearances in other programs, including the made-for-television film,"The Dain Curse," opposite Ellis Rabb and Jean Simmons. He also appeared on daytime television as Stephen Frame in "Another World." Among his feature films are "Hombre," "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre" and "End of a Dark Street." He also starred with Marian Seldes in the independently produced comedy film, "In a Pig's Eye."
