SEVEN
DAYS of SICILY
-visit
to my far relatives-
[ 23/04/04 --> 30/04/04 ]
Thursday,
22nd of April:
my
intensiv
course
is over, exams
passed,
I get
the qualification
as
expert
of QMS
[Quality
Management Systems] : well it's
time to
celebrating
and having
relax, in only
seven
days
of Sicily.
Friday, 23rd of
April:
Fly
all over Italy,
from
Venice
to
Palermo,
final
destination:
Erice,
international town of science,
as
guest of my Uncle
"zio Franco". Feels
good to
see
him again
after long time, I'm
landing
in the Island
of "Scilla & Cariddi"
and it's
raining,
but
I don't
care: I'm
back to
Sicily!
Saturday,
24th of April:
I stay home all day long,
but
in the night I come out in a pub
with my
cousin
Giuseppe Bovino
-ah ah, it's
not a joke:
my cousin
has got
my same
name and surname,
'coz the italian
tradition
to
bring
the name of your grandad
is hard to
die,
but
oh well:
no crisis
of identity,
I'm
bleeding cowbov in the end.
Sunday,
25th of April:
it's
still
raining,
thank god
I'm
in Sicily!
With
my uncle
I come to
Marausa,
watching
the still desert
beachs
of the Mediterranean
Coust,
in a cold
and windy
day. My only
consolation:
the "cassatelle",
delicious
speciality
from
the South.
For the rest,
I spend
good time in family, playing with their
little puppy, having intesting
lesson of Decoupage
or reading
book about
Mafia.
Monday, 26th of April: finally the sun is shining, my uncle -as good navigator-bring me by car long the Tyrrhenian Coast, through Cornino & Lido Valderice, Bonaga & Pizzolungo, not far from Punta Cofano, amazing promontory.
Tuesday, 27th of
April:
in Marsala in the
mornin',
port
where
Garibaldi (our
national
hero) started
the unification
of
Italy,
before
theater
of epic
battles
between the old Romans
and Carthaginees
[the Punic
Wars] ; visit to
the old part
of Erice
in the afternoon,
typical
italian
old town built
by stones.
Thursday,
28th of April:
I take a ship
from
Trapani, landing
to
the wild Lvanzo,
the smallest
island
of the Egadi; my aim
is going
all around this
island,
without
considering
its
hard territory...Levanzo,
can'
t believe
I'm
still
in Italy!
I walk
for 3 hours
under the sun-and the birds...-
almost
reaching
the north
cape
of the island,
but
the coust
is unaccessible
in some points,
between white
rocks
on the blue sea; my only
-terrible-
company: the wild shouts
of the birds:
I even
try
to
get
the attention
of any boats,
but
without
success; so I have
to
come back to
my steps
and after other
3 hours
of excursion -a glimpse
of human civilization-
I am
in the village
with
its
200 people, finding
finally
relief
and restoration...
Wednesday,
29th of April:
again
on my own, without
my best uncle,
I come by bus to
Palermo, capitol
of Sicily.
I visit
its
main
squares
walking
through Maqueda
& Vittorio Emanuele Street. I see
the gorgeus
dome: you know, it's
said
that
two
brothers,
both
architects,
realized
respectively
the Monreale's
& Palermo's
Dom:
as
the first-one
came
to
Palermo to
see
this
dom, watching
all its
magnificent
outside,
he
died
of desperation
thinking
about
its
internal
part,
that
actually
is austere. Crazy
sicilian
people!
Friday,
30th of April:
oh no,
it's
time to
come back in Vicenza.
Thank you Zio, thank you Beppe,
I'll keep good
memories
of these
Days
of Sicily.
mother Sicily knows
that someone's bleedin'
between melancholy and hope
