Lughnassadh Workshop

The celebration of Lughnassadh, which is held on August 1st, is the considered the first harvest celebration of the year. This is the time when the God gives his body to the Earth so that His children there will be sustained throughout the year with food. This is seen as the first or bread harvest and the beginning of Fall. This is a time when we should give thanks for all that we have received (reaped) during the year. It is also a time to begin any harvesting that you might have to do in your fields. This sabbat is also a time to celebrate the God Lugh, who is sometimes seen as the God of the Harvest. Another activity that can be done during this time is the sacrificing of a John Barleycorn. This is a representation of the God made out of cornstalks that is thrown into a sacred fire. Also, you can offer up some of your first harvest to the Goddess and the God as a thanks for what you have received for the year.

There are many correspondences for this sabbat. Some of the incenses for this sabbat are apple, frankincense, and sandalwood. Any kind of fall colors are appropriate here, as are fall decorations such as pumpkins, squash, straw, and cornstalks. This is also a good time to make a corn dolly to use for Imbolc. In order to make a corn dolly, you need a bundle of wheat or some corn husks. You need to tie them up to form a small, round head and let the rest of it flow out at the bottom. Then, take some extra pieces of wheat or corn husks and form arms for the dolly. You can then make a small bonnet or decorate your dolly with flowers. This can then be offered up to the Goddess and God at Imbolc.
