Technology to Support Communication

In the world of modern technology that we live in, children are growing up using cellular devices, laptops, Ipads, and any other type of electronic device. They are very comfortable with the internet and feel because of this, they can take for granted that the internet can also pose a serious threat. "Students use technology on a daily basis and feel that the internet is just something that is in their daily life and for that reason, it is fun and they can use it non-chalantly". (Fox-Turnbull, 2010). Internet security is not only crucial for the particular student using the computer however, it is very important for the other students in the classroom, the teacher, and the school in general.  With all of the well experienced computer users, security and privacy issues are breached on a daily basis. Personal and confidential information can be obtained by someone hacking into the computer. The students need to be aware of downloading files due to attached viruses. This can be detrimental to the computer and all of those involved. Students must be aware that there are rules and criteria that must be followed in order to have the right to use the computer. Monitoring students can be the instructor to insure the student does not access any site that is not permissible. The computer must have filters that does not allow the student to log on to any site that is not approved. Also, monitoring by other stakeholders helps the school to ensure all of the set rules are followed when it comes to computer usage, as far as the students not being on a website or downloading anything that is not allowed.  Above all, it is important to instruct the students on the importance of following the rules and the ramifications if they do not. If students were aware of all the risks that are associated with the internet when not used appropriately, they may be a little more cautious while using it. The Internet can be a wonderful place to learn, play games, and communicate. Unfortunately, there are also predators, identity thieves, and others online who may try to harm an individual. In order to be safe online, it's important for educators as well as students no matter of their grade, know how to protect themselves. As educators, or parents, helping to keep a child safe by talking to them about their Internet use, teaching them about online dangers, and learning everything you can about the Internet so they can make informed decisions. It's also important for students to be careful whenever they're connected to the Internet because online dangers are not just limited to bad websites. They can be atteck while doing educational things or browsing the web. For children, computer technology has provided an indescribable wealth of resources, information and knowledge; since the introduction of the internet, students are now able to access information on any subject they want. Resources include journals, articles, e-books, practice tests and examinations, model answers and research findings. "Research has also suggested that computer technology has helped students to improve their grades in other subjects, most notably science." (Rader, 2002). Practically, students can work much faster using a computer which enables them to do more study in the same period of time. In addition to computers, many schools and colleges are using new methods of technology to enhance the learning experience; these include digital television channels, DVDs, digital radio and sophisticated forms of communication technology. Digital radio and television allow students to access a wealth of different channels which cover a vast range of different subjects including languages, science, history and geography to name just a few. Children are used to new technology as they have grown up with it; it is therefore undoubtedly beneficial that they have the option to use it to increase their learning capacity and pursue their interests. Educational programmes and podcasts are now widely available to download to your computer or MP3 player; this makes education more modern and multi-faceted. Today books and pencils are joined by laptops, computers and tablet as educational essentials. The children now entering school are fully fledged digital natives. "Technology is playing an increasingly central role in the classroom." (O'Connell, 2005). Using technology in an educational environment not only better reflects children’s life outside the classroom, but also allows them to use their digital skills in a way that will continue to be valuable to them throughout their adult life. Global community are the people or nations of the world, considered as being closely connected by modern telecommunications and as being economically, socially, and politically interdependent. A global community is one in which the teacher seeks to expand and broaden he or she own knowledge of culturally diverse communities, within the dominant culture of the school community, and to impart that knowledge and excitement about other cultures to his or her students. More importantly, the desire is to teach understanding of and tolerance for differences that exist within different subcultures and this helps students learn to function and succeed within the larger global community which is the planet on which we live. The Global Community would most represent the strongest nations, even though all nations ideally would be part of our total Earth's economy, or existence. Technology, especially social media, has fostered the growth of global community and has done so for over an decade now. For example, Facebook has been the number one way for humanity to connect with stakeholders, friends, and family, to share and exchange important information. As a future educator, my goal for my future students is to take part in the global community and one way that I think that my students can do this is by having a virtual pen pal from another country. Students can learn about another culture and share a bit of culture with another country.
