Community Radio

The first commmunity radio station in Harrow will go on the air this August. Want to get involved? Read on!

Harrow Community Radio  is being set up to promote the integration of people with a learning disability in the local community by involving them in running a station on a 50:50 basis. The station will need input from others, particularly young people. Broadcasting will start at the beginning of the month, and end after the Harrow Show at the end of the month. Transmission will be 10w FM from a studio in Pinner, with a 25% speech content.

There are opportunities for all sorts of volunteers - DJs, technical people, presenters, newshounds, musicians and trainers, admin people etc. We can't offer any money, and it won't be the same experience that you might get on a commercial station, but if you want an enriching experience that will help your CV, and if you are community minded it could be just the job. You'll get practice, and you'll learn about a whole other side of life.

The Roles we can offer:

* Jingles wanted!

* Presenters and technicians etc.

* Trainers may be needed (the best way to learn).

What we ask:

* We aren't asking people to give up a whole month (unless they want to!) - even if you can only do a few days it's probably worth getting in touch. What we do need is for you to stick to whatever you commit to just as if you were in paid employment.

* We don't want social workers, but friendly, understanding ordinary people who are prepared to be patient and to listen.

* We are offering disability awareness training, probably either a one day course or three evenings, and we would prefer volunteers to take this training if that is reasonably possible.

Contacts

Who to contact depends on what you want to do

If you are interested in helping to train young people in Harrow in June and early July the person to contact is Mike Padmore at the arts unit 020 8424 1803

Mike is also recruiting young people as presenters, Djs, technicians etc through Harrow Council's youth and connections department. If you are a "young" resident of the borough of Harrow you might be able to get involved that way.

If you want to produce some jingles, contact David Gawn (program controller) at Harrow Linkup;  [email protected] or 020 8868 5808

If you want to help with studio based training sessions in July, or if you are a mature student, or if you want to help in other ways you should also contact David.

Many Thanks!
David Gawn (FRSA)
