A look back to Mayo, June 2003

When the going gets tough the tough get going

Well I should start at the beginning which was the article I wrote in April about how some of the lads got quickly into their stride and the scoring was pretty good as well. I started to play more and more with Chris and Joe G. away from home as well as playing up in my golf club. For those of you who do not know it, it is just a little 9 hole whose greens have a bit of a slope to them. You can run up to double figures very easily on them. I found it very hard to score well there. In fact I only managed to score 37 points once in 2002. This year with the help of Chris and Joe my scoring improved but at a great cost to me as the pair of them kept taking my money more times than not.

A trip to Scotland for a weeks golf in early June did me a lot of good, no really good scores to talk about but at this point I was looking forward to Mayo.

As luck would have it I was playing well enough to be in the lead going into the last day. Where surprise! surprise! Joe Garafalo freaked sorry streaked away to win with an amazing 49 points. I gave it my best shot but it was not good enough to win. The better man on the day, and may I say congratulations to you Joe once again.

Now back to the title when the going gets tough the tough get going. Our Captains Prize was played over 42 holes. Two eighteens and a final six on the second Sunday. On the first Sunday I finished with a net 68, and much to my surprise I was tied in a three way lead. After the second 18 with a net 65, gave me a total of 133. After the final 6 holes I was the winner by 1/3 of a shot. I still cant believe it, a couple of weeks before I was pipped to the post now here I am in first place. How did that happen? How did I keep my nerve?

What made the difference? All I know is without Chris urging me on I would not have been able to do it. Chris turned out to be a great mentor to me. Thanks a million I suppose you want to get to taking my money on Sundays again! Thats if my amazing daughter doesnt take it off me and you first! I put that in (Jen) hehe

So is there a recipe for success? First get a good sports psychologist, I am sure Chris would be only too glad to help at a price. Hang in there and play as often as you can. Just think of me as Kaffa does, a deaf old git, if he can do it, so can you!

I am already thinking of Mayo in 2004

Keep swinging easy.

A happy deaf old git.
