Is Heavily Hyped Gay Series
Really Drawing An Audience?
Although Showtime announced this week that it had achieved "solid
ratings" for its new gay-themed series Queer as Folk and has
renewed it for an additional 20 episodes, today's (Friday)
Washington Post indicates that the show has probably drawn few
viewers outside of the gay community. Pointing out that neither
Showtime nor Nielsen will reveal the actual ratings for the show
(Nielsen told the Post: "We are totally not allowed to tell
you anything about Showtime. They have issued that edict. ...
They are the only cable network [that has done this].") the
Post said that it had learned from sources that Queer as Folk
drew 1.4 million viewers last Sunday, making it the 84th most
watched cable program of the week, "ahead of
Courage, the Cowardly Dog on the Cartoon Network (No. 85) but behind the Professional Bull
Riders St. Louis Open on TNN."
