All the fear has left me now
I'm not frightened anymore
It's my heart that pounds beneath my flesh
it's my mouth that pushes out this breath
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Companion to our demons
they will dance, and we will play
With chairs, candles, and cloth
making darkness in the day
It will be easy to look in or out
upstream or down without a thought
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
Peace in the struggle
to find peace
comfort on the way
to comfort
and if I shed a tear I won't cage it
I won't fear love
and if I feel a rage I won't deny it
I won't fear love
I won't fear love
I won't fear love...
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
~Sarah McLachlan

Joey sat at the kitchen table that morning drinking her coffee like usual. As she scanned over the numerous advertisement pages, she heard Pacey come out of his room. Every Saturday morning he would wake up, walk into the kitchen and get some food, then head to the gym, leaving Joey with no one to talk to. This usually gave her the oppertunity to call and talk to Jen. Jen was probably the one woman whom she trusted with everything. Jen, for instance knew she was in love with Pacey. It was very hard for her to tell Jen, considering the fact that she and Pacey were friends. So far, Jen had kept her mouth shut. The last thing she needed was for Pacey to find out that she was in love with him. She wouldn't be able to live with how much that would boost his ego.

The male ego and brain are very unusual things. The ego, no matter how big, can be crushed by the fact that a woman doesn't want to have sex. Then, in order to make themselves feel not so rejected, they will berate the woman. They will proceed to call her names, ruin her reputation, or tell the other guys that they will never be able to get into her pants. The brain, the only part that ever seems to function that is, is set on one thing and one thing only. Men can sit in a room, watch two people have sex, and be turned on by that. They can also watch two women have sex and become hornier than they even know they could be. This made no sense to the female species. Ask any woman if she would watch two men have sex and she would answer "NO!".

Joey had come to the conclusion after living with Pacey for almost seven years, that men are stupid, slobs, and have no morals. And she lived with their king. Then there were the times when she would catch him in one of those great moods where every time he looked at her she felt that he cared about her, that even though it was far fetched, he wanted her. After his mom passed away, she remembered seeing this side of Pacey that he didn't show people. The side that he usually reserved for her. She was the only one who knew that he cried at the end of "Steel Magnolia's". When ever he would start messing with her about how high her heels were on her shoes, she would bring up the movie. He would then shut up quickly.

Pacey walked across the room and sat down with her. He rubbed his eyes, then looked up at her goofily. He was grinning, his hair was tousled, and he had on no shirt. Joey saw the muscles flew in his arms as he propped his head up on his hands.

"Morning," he said dazed.

"Morning," she just stared at his mouth. His two perfect lips were calling her name.

"Sleep well?"

"Yeah. You?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"I fell off my bed last night. I hit my shoulder on my night stand. It hurts like hell."

"Awe, poor baby."

Joey got up from her seat and walked behind where he was sitting. She began kneading his back and shoulders. She was going slow and hard on his tight skin. His moaning was doing horrible things to her. It was her own fault. She didn't have to massage his shoulders. The need to touch him was just too strong for her to deny. She felt him relax more into her hands. She loved touching him. She felt hot and bothered and knew that she was going to just let it go to waist because she was not going to act on her feelings.

She got so caught up in what she was doing, she was startled when he grabbed her hand. He brought her around to his side and gave her the once over. He noticed that she wasn't wearing anything but her white robe and night gown. He stood up in front of her and she saw the muscles in his stomach tighten as he moved. He placed his hand on her cheek and caressed it gently. She was letting him make the first move. She was not going to let him see that she wanted him. Hell would freeze over first.

As he caressed her cheek, she unconsciously leaned into his hand. She couldn't help it. His touch was like a God sent. She knew what Pacey was thinking when she looked into his cloudy blue eyes. She saw the same desire in his eyes that was in her eyes. The desire to be close to someone, to touch someone, to want someone. All feelings she was experiencing right then at his slightest touch. She'd never felt hotter. She was burning up. If just one little touch could make her so hot, she didn't know whether or not she'd be able to handle them making love without her head exploding.

Pacey leaned in slowly. He was deliberately taking his time. It was torture. She wanted to taste his kiss so badly. She wanted to feel his soft lips against hers. She wanted nothing more than for Pacey to kiss her and make love to her right there on the table. It was all too much. He was centimeters from her face and the phone rang.

Pacey dropped his hand and walked over to the phone. Joey had never felt so upset. The one time Pacey ever tried to make a move on her and the phone interrupts. She was angry. She watched as Pacey laughed at whoever it was on the other end on of the phone. He then signaled to Joey that it was for her. She tried to regain her composure then walked to the phone. She took it from Pacey their hands grazing one another. Sending electricity all over her body. Pacey left her and went to his room. Joey took a deep breath and plopped down on the couch.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Jo."

"Hey Jen. What's up?"

"Nothing. It's just 10:00 and I haven't heard from you yet. I was getting a little worried."

"Sorry."

"You okay?"

"Uh-huh."

"Can you give me an actual answer? One that requires more than one word is preferable."

"Jen can I call you back?"

"Joey what's wrong?"

Pacey came out of his room dressed to go work out and gym bag in hand. He walked across the room and out the front door without even a 'Good bye'. Her heart hurt. She didn't know what had happened that morning, but what ever it was, she didn't want to accept the fact that it could have destroyed her friendship with Pacey. But he tried to kiss her. So he started it. Then again, she was the one that started rubbing his shoulders and enjoyed every minute of it.

"Earth to Joey!"

"Sorry."

"What's wrong?"

"Pacey tried to kiss me this morning."

"What do you mean tried?"

"I mean tried, as in would have if you hadn't called."

Jen was silent. "You mean I destroyed your chance of him kissing you?"

"Kind of."

"Joey I'm sorry."

"That's not the bad part."

"What's the bad part?"

"He just left and didn't even acknowledge my existence." She sighed.

"Why do you think he almost kissed you?"

"Because...he's horny."

Jen laughed.

"Why else would he?"

"Did you ever think that he wanted to? Did you ever think that he might just want you as much as you want him?"

"Key word there being 'want'."

"Joey you don't know what he feels until you ask him. Maybe he does love you. Maybe he wants you so bad he can taste it. Maybe he's both. It could be that he's just afraid of your rejection..."

"My rejection? I would never reject Pacey! Why would he think that?"

"Joey think about this, he's a guy. Why do guys think the way they do?"

"But he should know better."

"How would he know better, Jo? You have never told him how you feel about him. You've never even given him a reason to question how you feel about him. And you just expect him to read your mind. Joey, this is Pacey we're talking about. He is probably the best example of a guy that I can think of. You have to give him hints."

"I think I gave him a big hint today."

"Look, if you want to be with Pacey as much as you say you do, you have to tell him and let him decide if he wants to be with you. I know it's taking a big risk, but that's what life is all about, taking risks."

"I know. You're right, as usual. What kind of hints?"

"I don't know. You have to come up with that."

"Subtle hints?"

"Depends on the impact you want."

"I want an ever-lasting impact!"

"Well, give him a big hint."

"Like what?"

"Damn Joey, you're a grown woman. Think of something!"

"Okay. Let's change the subject."

"Good idea."

"How's Henry?"

"How is Henry always?"

"So I take that as good?"

"Yeah. He's so sweet."

"Little Jenny's in love."

"Big time. In high school I just thought he was this little kid who didn't know anything about life, but now..."

"But now?"

"He is no little kid."

Joey laughed. "I bet that makes you pretty happy, huh?"

"Oh yeah."

"So how's Jack?"

"He's...okay, I guess."

"You guess?"

"Daniel, Jack's boyfriend, or should I say ex-boyfriend, dumped him last night."

"Is he okay?"

"He will be. Jack said that Daniel took him to a party and did it in the middle of the room for all the people to see. How low class is that?"

"That's horrible. How could he do that?"

"Got me. But last night we sat, talked, and finished off a carton of cookie-dough ice- cream. I think he feels a little better."

"Mmmm, cookie-dough ice-cream."

"Hey, I gotta go. Henry's here. He's taking me ice skating."

"Bye. Give Henry and Jack my love."

"Will do. Give Pacey mine. Bye."

As Joey hung the phone up, she had this overwhelming feeling of dread. She knew Jen was right. She knew she had to tell him how she felt. Joey knew what she had to do. Her only hope was that Pacey wouldn't laugh at her or walk away. She was going to give him the biggest hint of his life.
