Plecostomus
Large Plecostomus (common)
Here is another shot of my Plecostomus. It lives in my 75 gallon cichlid tank. This fish is for sale for local pick-up only. I think a fair price would be $35.00, but I may be persuaded to trade for aquarium related items. You can reach me at my email. The fish is currently in Huntsville, Texas. I have moved this fish using a 48qt ice chest, and a portable air pump sold in the sporting goods department at Wal-Mart stores. I bought this fish several months ago, and it has been doing really well, but I feel it is really too big for my tank. There just isn't enough space on the bottom of the tank for it to be comfortable. Of course I haven't talked to the fish to know it is uncomfortable so this is just my opinion. SOLD!
This Plecostomus is only about five inches long. I bought this one at Wal-mart before I realized how big they could get. It currently resides in one of my 29 gallon tanks with two Ghost Knife Fish, one Dwarf Male Gourami, one Powder Blue Dwarf Male Gourami, one Striped Rapheal Catfish, one Giant Danio, and several Crawfish. I supplement it's diet with algae wafers. These fish aren't able to survive comfortably on just the algae that grows naturally in the tank. I have also seen them eating flake food, and frozen foods such as Frozen Brine Shrimp, Frozen Blood Worms. They will even attach themselves to deceased fish and feed on that. It is also a good idea to place some driftwood in the tank with them. The cellulose in the wood is important for the pleco's digestive system, plus the places where the wood has been eaten, more algae will grow. In my 75 gallon tank I have a large piece of thin driftwood which doubles as a place for it to hide under. Plecostomus are nocturnal and prefer to feed at night. This is one reason that you should feed them algae wafers just before you turn the lights off at night. For more info on Plecostomus and many other fish click here.
