"Freshwater" Moray Eel
This is a picture of my not-so happy eel on his first day in my possesion. It was given to me by a friend who no longer wanted to have aquariums. This was June 10, 2005. I took this picture while it was still in the bag because the camera I had at the time was junk.
This is my Freshwater Moray Eel. I have done quite a bit of research and have found conflicting accounts as to what the scientific name is for this species. This fish was given to me at the same time as the two above. It was about twelve inches at that point and is now about thirteen to fourteen inches. I am sure it is not really a freshwater fish so I keep it in my 75 gallon cichlid tank because it is the only one which has enough salt in the water. "Salt in the water???" you say? Yes I add marine salt to the water to bring the specific gravity to approximately 1.005 when measured with a Hydrometer. I do the same thing for my guppy/molly tank, but they would probably not last even a week. The eel is very active. It comes out and explores in the evenings, and whenever I add the weekly feeding of rosy reds, and goldfish. I believe he is getting plenty to eat because he is growing in both length and girth. It also eats the ghost shrimp, and crawfish I occasionally add. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that even fish that look too big to fit in its mouth, can. I lost several clown loaches, and a green spotted puffer. I would never have added the puffer but I had no choice. I had to move the tank in a hurry. The loaches on the other hand were quite a bit bigger around than the eel's mouth, or so I thought.
Another picture of my favorite fish. He's kinda lounging right here, he has already had a couple of feeder fish to eat.
Here are a couple of pictures of the eel with some of his food. On the left you can see two of the Rosy Reds, and on the right you can see one of the feed goldfish. He is very enthusiastic about his food.
