June 5, 1998 Concert ReviewUnion Station
I went with my friend Sara and her boyfriend Eric. We took MetroLink, and got there about 4pm. I'm glad we did, because around 6, when we were walking back in to the concert area after a bathroom break, they were checking bags for cameras! We were glad ours were safe with Eric at our lawn chairs. And I was happy....I got the Direct Hits shirt, that I didn't have money for at the Six Flags show! The opening act was Jeff Batson, a local act. He came on at 6:30, and played for about a half hour. He opened with "Hello Walls". He did Billy Joel's "You May Be Right". Jeff also did George Strait's "Lovebug", and some other country songs, including Garth Brooks' "Two Pina Coladas". He also did a great medley of Elvis songs. That was really good! He ended with "Desperado". Collin came on at about 8pm, a half hour late. He wore blue jeans, a white long-sleeved shirt, with a mandarin collar? (One that is just the band, with the button on it), and a double-breasted vest. Most people in lawn chairs, but a lot were standing too. So, we ended up standing the whole concert! I ended up being able to see really good, almost the whole time. He started with "Little Red Rodeo", and then "I Think About You", and "In This Life". He said the new album, The Walls Came Down, will be out July 14th. Then he talked about how he loved coming to St. Louis. He said they don't get here much, and when they do, it's usually on the outskirts, but today they were right down there (this was downtown). He said he'd been a Cardinals fan since he was seven years old. He said they have bus trouble once a year, and it just had to be yesterday. He said they had no headlights, so they had to drive during the day. And because of that, he had to miss batting practice with the Cardinals, which he said KIX had set up for him! I felt so bad for him! Then he did "Little Rock". Collin told all of us that we could just burt into chaotic applause if we wanted to, whenever we wanted to. Then it was time for "My Kind of Girl", where he changed "Braves fan" to "Cards fan", of course! "What the Heart Wants" was next... they did the echo on the last work- "Here". Then came "Not That Different". Next was "That's My Story", which he got the whole crown to join in on the singing, finishing lines for him. It was great! And, like last time, he said it was so easy to sing along with because we had all been there before. He said the stage was smaller than they were used to, and he didn't know if he liked being closer to the guys. He also said the drummer is usually up on a platform, so this was different, because he got to look down on the drummer, not look up at him. He did "The Gift", and said it won the Dove award for best country song, and how it was also a pop success as a duet. Next was "On the Verge", and the band intros. Next was the new single, "I Can Still Feel You". He said it is his fasted rising single ever. This reallly got the crowd going. It's a great concert song! He said that KIX also arranged a meeting with a little girl Brooke, who was at St. louis Children's Hospital. He dedicated the next song to her, which was "Love, Me". He said his thank you's, and good-bye. The crowd kept clapping and yelling...... then he came back out for his encore. He did "I Want You Bad". He said they had a "curfew" (9pm it must have been). He brought out his daughter, Britanny, and she helped him out by singing background on "Lococmotion", which was wonderful! He said forget about the curfew, two more! And they did, but it was so loud by then, and my ears were ringing, I couldn't really hear what they were singing. But the 3rd song, "When Will I Be Loved", he did with his daughter, and she sang backup on the fourth. Then he said his final goodbye's. The show was about an hour and 10 or 15 minutes. The show was just wonderful! I think Eric even enjoyed it (he's not a country fan!).
