| I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA), a non-profit international organization whose members strive to learn more about the middle ages by re-creating aspects of Medieval life. One of the first things a newcomer to the SCA does is pick a medieval name to go by. The name I picked is Katrionna Heather MacLochlainn. Most folks just call me "Kat." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The SCA is primarily for personal education and for fun, however, in addition to our living history activities, our members are often involved in community service. Once a year my region holds a Toy Tournament where entrants had to donate at least one toy in order to participate. The collected toys are then donated to each local group's favorite charity in time for Christmas. We also hold educational demonstrations for local schools and other community organizations and events (including Renaissance festivals, etc.) For administrative purposes the SCA has divided our modern geography into kingdoms (I think there were 16 at last count). Each kingdom is made up of smaller groups: principalities, baronies, shires, cantons and such. My kingdom is called Ansteorra (Old English for "one star") and comprises most of the states of Oklahoma and Texas. At a rough guess, we probably have around 2000 people who play SCA in our kingdom. My local group (most of the greater Oklahoma City area) is known as the Barony of Wiesenfeuer (a German word meaning "prairie fire") and has somewhere around 70 local active members. |

| In the SCA, the role I've chosen for myself is that of the daughter of a Celtic lady and her Scottish Lord. Born around 1285 AD, Kat chose the unlikely life of a warrior. Not because she was good at the combat arts, but because she yearned for adventure and despised sewing and other ladylike tasks. She ended up fighting alongside such Scottish heroes as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce (yes, I picked my persona back in 1987 - way before the movie "Braveheart"). Out of sheer luck, she managed to survive Scotland's war for independence and met and married an Ansteorran knight. Here's a few pictures of my Lord and I. The Crowns are from when we got to be King and Queen. It was an honor, but a lot of hard work too. Fortunately you only get to do that for 6 months at a time. |

| Some of the SCA activities that I enjoy are: armored combat (yes we really do hit each other with sticks, and you're right, it's not the smartest thing I've ever done), calligraphy and illumination, fabric painting, weaving, middle eastern drumming, and singing. Oh, and did I mention Armored Combat? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| There's a lot to do in the SCA. If your interest is in the history and/or legend of the middle ages, you should check out a local branch near you! You can most likely find contact information for groups in your area at the official SCA website. If you have problems, you can e-mail me. If I can't help you, I can probably find someone who can! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
