From M.N. Roy's Mission to China, Robert C. North and Xenia J. Eudin, 1963
At the Second Congress of the Communist International meeting during July, 920, which opened in Petrograd and continued in Moscow, a fundamental debate was joined between V. I. Lenin and M. N. Roy, a veteran Indian revolutionist who only recently had been converted to communism.During the early years of World War I Roy had been part of a world-wide plot, financed by the Imperial Germans, to overthrow the British in India and in other colonial areas. Apprehended in the United States along with other plotters, Roy escaped from New York City with his American wife and took refuge in Mexico City where, in due course, he met M. M. Borodin, who had been engaged in an ill-fated attempt at selling a suitcase full of tsarist crown jewels in Western Hemisphere gem markets.
In the course of checkers sessions lasting into early morning hours, Borodin gradually converted Roy to communism and in 1920 arranged for him to attend the Second Congress of the Communist International.
Ironically, it was these two checkers cronies who, coming face to face in Hankow seven years later, argued over the meanings of Comintern policy, and, even more ironically, it was Roy, the disciple of Mexico City days, who was sent to check on the failures of Borodin. Later yet, . . . it was Borodin who, almost more than any other Russian except Bukharin, was responsibly, probably at great risk to himself, for getting Roy safely out of Moscowwhen the Indian had fallen into disfavorand beyond the range of Stalins wrath.
