CHAPTER FOUR

GENERAL SEMANTICS

In his splendid exposition of the foundation of semantics in the article "The Semantic Conception of Truth and the Foundations of Semantics" Alfred Tarski wrote:

[etc]

Comment That is the beginning of the chapter on general semantics. About two pages follow of inaccurate and invalidative remarks. The accolades given by this 'marxist' writer to Tarski are certainly no credit to the latter.

...     Books can be read in two ways. First — in search of what is wrong and stupid in them, "prey" for criticism — this is the manner of reading typical of those who do not know how to avail themselves of the achievements of science. But one can also read them in a quite different manner, looking for what is new, stimulating and calculated to promote science, despite all the errors and falsehoods, which may be quite numerous in given cases. This way of reading books is characteristic of people who know how to make use of science. If a scientific work includes even a single new and creative thought to stimulate scientific inventiveness, then it must not be lost, it must not be allowed to be drowned in the ocean of errors.

That postulate must cause us firmly to reject our practices, of many years standing, in the matter of criticism of non-Marxist views in philosophy.   (Etc.)

( page 93 )

Comment ' . . . looking for what is new, stimulating and calculated to promote science, despite all the errors and falsehoods, which may be quite numerous in given cases. This way of reading books is characteristic of people who know how to make use of science.'

What about 'errors and falsehoods, which may be quite numerous in given cases' of authors who engage in deliberate disinformation ?

The only 'science' which seems possible in such cases is the science of discovering the 'errors and falsehoods'. But this, according to this 'marxist', is no science. These cobwebs were being spun with sorts of mastery and method.

Without arguing whether this be or be not science, one does discover patterns of 'errors and falsehoods'. This book on 'semantics' by this 'marxist' does point out to some precedents of Mr. A. Schaff ; and, whoever may have patience for such studies, the omissions in it may be indicative of the actual designs of the 'marxist' — rather than what has been actually said.
