"Dr. Leon Botstein, president, has no qualms to name the Chair for Social Studies in honor of Alger Hiss, a convicted American traitor who spied* for the Soviet Union."
http://www.fortfreedom.org/o14.htm

Comment Spying was arguably one of the lesser crimes by Mr. Hiss.
Attempted was an imposition on the USA of a program which was quite contradictory to the principles found in the American Constitution — and most of the time contradictory to any common sense at all — in collusion with or representing the interests of another power.
The Dictator Hiss, or some pal of his (had that happened) could in no way become a boon to America, considering the ramifications of such a possibility — which from all appearance was being contemplated.
The "other power" mentioned above has relented in the meanwhile, as far as any push of un-sanity onto the entire world be considered — from that source.
A "something" is still lingering at some places ; read on, Professor, make sure not to overlook too much of what has been obvious.

"The gentle wisdom of this protege of Oliver Wendell Holmes and Franklin Roosevelt inspired Leon Botstein, at whose Bard College there is now an endowed Alger Hiss professorship."

Comment Just find out about how FDR had been duped by the whole racket, including but not limited to Alger Hiss.

Why should anyone try to cover up the Reds of the 1930-50's ? — with a sort of "Red Mole Endowment" ?

Am I in any way mistaken on that interpretation ?

I do not see an other — and I would not strain my brain in order to find apologies for somebody's most highly questionable activities.
