On my search today, only 'kraepelin, emil' showed at the University of California catalogue ; ('kraplin, emil', 'krapelin, emil' and/or 'kraeplin, emil' showed not).

Now, the German 'a umlaut' ('ä') is often given as 'ae' (or 'æ') in the English, so one could perhaps do without the 'kraplin' or 'krapelin'. But I do not know about the 'e' (Kraeplin versus Kraepelin) and I suppose it was either one or the other form that had been used by the author himself.

If so, then the form which had not been used by the author himself would be of course wrong. Supposing that he himself had only used one form of his name (which seems rather natural and rather probable), one might investigate, whence any other form.

I do not know at this point, Professor which form (or forms) had been used by Mr. Kraeplin (Kraepelin?) himself but this might be worthy clarifying — so that there would be less insanity abroad (and not more, no matter what some pill-pushers might entertain for their "opinion").

Before you get paranoid, the reader

Please do not read any of the treatises documented in the bibliography below ; unless you really want to get to "the bottom" of the matter, although it still might be not worth the trouble.

To Mr. Kraeplin, who apparently had a sort of mania for classification,¹ "insanity" was a 'kind' of entity, a "something" capable of various modifications — whereas sanity is only a matter of degree. The vague had necessarily resulted in the obscure. Not much to pronounce against somebody's 'scientific' delusions about a century ago, one could do well to mind that any such delusions do not multiply.

Multiplied they did — in the meanwhile. My favourite, of the more recent ones, has been a pseudologia fantastica proposed by some 'specialist' at the Los Angeles Times a few years ago.

A "cute" invention ; it simply meant what it's author produced himself — presumably on the assumption that many an unwary reader will mistake the (fundamentally true) statement for something other than it actually meant, i.e. it's author's pseudologia fantastica.

How do I know, Professor that that be what 'pseudologia fantastica' really was ? In truth, I do not know ; the preceding is strictly a conjecture. It is the only rational explanation of psudologia fantastica I for one could think of.

I do not strongly assert that was exactly the case ; please, inquire with the Los Angeles Times, Professor, locate the person who had coined (discovered?) pseudologia fantastica and request some more information on the etiology of such a disease.

Alas, I'm afraid I have not yet exhausted the 'subject'.
