Joseph Cadden, Head of the American Youth Congress ; friend of Joseph Lash who headed the American Student Union.

Cadden, Jack McMichael, Abbott Simon were occasionally received at the White House at Lash’s request.

Cadden took part in pickets at the White House organized by American Peace Mobilization, a Communist front which during the times of the Stalin/Hitler pact (1939-41) was for all intents and purposes allied with the German National Socialists.

The purpose of the pickets and other activities of those groups was, plainly speaking, to cause the Americans not do to anything that might weaken the forces of Stalin’s then-ally Hitler. These were the “peace” demonstrations under the head of “The Yanks are not coming !” and the like.

Please be careful the reader, on this point. The “peace” demonstrations in the years 1939-41 in effect meant leaving A. Hitler and his armies unmolested, lest this important ally of Stalin might suffer any losses such as could weaken Stalin’s communist cause — which two causes were practically one at the time, at least as far as the American Communists were concerned.

(Some honest ones quit the party in that period ; this was also the time (2 Sept 39) when Whittaker Chambers had decided to inform the US Government about the Soviet moles in its midst ; whose warning went unheeded for nine years — until the scene was ready for the Korean conflict and every other conflict ensuing thereafter).

Anything can be written in 2006 or so about a fellow who was “peacefully demonstrating” before the White House with signs saying “Save Democracy with Peace”, or “Vigil for Peace”.

Anything except what the design of those actions was ; which was sinister indeed.
