| Six Steps to Simplify College Planning 1) Know Yourself and Your Reasons for Attending College > recognize your strengths and weaknesses > look carefully at what kinds of things your interested in doing and what you value in life > decide on a personal life goal > know that a college education can increase your earning power in the world of work > take the necessary steps to prepare for a career > plan to be a lifelong learner - most careers require periodic updates and training > most people will change jobs 4 to 5 times in their work career > participate in extracurricular activities and have a happy well rounded social life > talk to family and friends about your plans, hopes, and dreams 2) Consider College Characteristics > look carefully at what majors and educational programs are offered > look at the type of school and what degrees are offered > check admissions requirements > consider location and size > how much does it cost to go to the college of your choice? > what types and amounts of financial aid are offered? > look at what organizations the college is affliated with and check for accreditation > what campus activities are offered? > are support services offered? 3) List, Compare, and Visit Colleges starting no later than your Junior year > use several different sources to compile information about the colleges your interested in -- internet, websites -- college catalogs, bulletins, videos -- visit your high school counselor -- talk to your teachers -- talk to your parents, other students, and high school graduates who are currently attending college -- use directories and information supplied you by such tests as ACT and SAT > prepare a college comparison checklist > carefully weigh advantages and disadvantages > contact the office of admission at the colleges in which your interested > schedule appointments to visit the campus and take a tour Link to Home Page Link to Page 3 for More College Information |
