| The PSAT PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT. It functions as a practice test for the SAT and in the fall of a student's junior year becomes a qualifying score for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Since this test is given only once a year it is recommended that students also take the PSAT their tenth grade year to practice for the junior year examination. The test is administered on our campus and other high schools as well. Students who are homeschooled are invited to notify the high school closest to their home in September to reserve a testing seat. The cost of the test is $10. Hillcrest High Testing Date for 2004 is Tuesday, October 21,2003 at 8:00 a.m The SAT The SAT is required by many colleges for admission to their institution. They often have a minimum score requirement. The SAT score is also often used to determine scholarship eligibility. It is the student's responsibility to check with the college they plan to attend to see what the scholarship and entrance requirements are. The student must fill out a SAT registration packet with check or money order or go on-line at www.collegeboard.com with a credit card to register for the test. A limited number of registration packets are available in the school counseling office. Students are encouraged to go on-line to register. Test sites are located at various college campuses across Alabama and the U.S. There is a $26 fee to take the test. The College Board develops course descriptions and tests for a variety of college courses. Many colleges grant incoming freshman college level credit with qualifying AP exam scores.
