Burgam was once a Lightblade, and when he was, he swore to protect and obey the King, whoever the king might be. When Chanton came to power, Burgam joined the Guards. Chanton, seeing an opportunity to provide at least a little structure to the Guards, declared Burgam the Commander, which is the highest position.
Burgam respects the Rebels and their beliefs and goals. He respects Fox for his fighting skills. He feels torn between his duties and his morals. But he lets the duties win, leading the Guards with a gruff and stern bearing.
Burgam was once swordbrother to Brury and Anton, when they were Lightblades. They all took different paths, and now Burgam looks down on Brury and Anton for abandoning their king, though he understands their reasons. He is more hostile to Brury than Anton, for Anton mearly gave up fighting altogether.
