Chapter 1 - Howitzer Bunk
Once upon a time, I had a goal in life. I had plans, had a career chosen out. I was going to be somebody. I was going to be a warrior, a leader of men into battle. I was going to be a fighter my father and planet could be proud of. Howitzer Bunk, War Hero. That was going to be me.
So much for THAT plan.
The colonel at my high school said I had a lot of potential. That, given practice, intensive training, and a strong willpower, I could even become a general one day. A general, for crying out loud. He recommended me to the Academy, got me the scholarship, and sent me on my way to glory, power, and the history books.
Then things got a little whacked.
If my father could see me now, he would be disgraced. How could he cope with his son being a crewmember on a stranded ship, stuck in the absolute middle of nowhere with nothing for light years in any direction, captained by a seventeen year old GIRL?!
Not that shes not a good leader. Of all of us, she was the best for the job. But best out of twelve people is not saying much. Plus, she has ultimately no experience and no clue. And shes a bit odd. That curiosity streak of hers is going to get her killed someday.
Its not easy to deal with the other crewmembers, either. The ages range from twenty-five, me, to eleven. And many of them act like children even if theyre not. Often I feel like Im a babysitter in a nursery, rather than a Military and Tactical Advisor.
I have a new goal in life now. Its to do everything I can to help the ship, so that one day we may find our way home. And then I could get the hell off this glorified canoe.
If I had never gone to the Academy, none of this would have happened. I wish I had known. I would have stayed the hell home.
