SMOOOCHES for all to whom it is appropriate, Mike (a.k.a. BIO PROF) here.
A Hoosier at heart, I was born and raised in South Bend, IN. I took a trip to Ohio for college but returned to Indiana University for graduate training. After receiving my doctorate, I worked at colleges in Washington state and Michigan before settling down at the University of Scranton in PA, and I'm still here after 20+ years. I teach general biology, animal behavior, and evolution, and direct the environmental science degree program.
Besides teaching, I do research on the reproductive and mating behavior of birds. For the past 15 years I have been working with a population of field sparrows on a 100 acre field site near my home. I trap and mark the birds for identification and follow mating and nesting for the population. I also get blood samples from all adults and nestlings and use DNA extracted from the blood to make DNA fingerprints to determine genetic parent offspring relationships. There's a lot of fooling around going on (we scientists call it extra-pair copulation) so young birds in a nest are not necessarily the offspring of the adults taking care of them.
I have been married for 34 years and have 3 kids -- all of them (at last) are out of the house now. My youngest, son Chad, (20 yrs) is a U of Scranton sophomore studying Media and Information Technology . He is the epitome of a computer geek, but he sure keeps my machine running well and updated with the latest HW.
My oldest, daughter Shannon -- 28, got married in July 2000. She and her hubby Jim live in Baltimore, where she coordinates web-based learning for the University of Maryland - Balt. Co.
The middle one, son Sean -- 22, was in the army stationed in Colorado Springs, where he got married on March 16, 2000. He and wife Callie made me a grandparent for the first time on May 1st of that year. Baby Briana was real premature - LOL. Sean got out of the army in August 2001 and is now a student at the Univ. of Scranton, studying Communications.
I love nature, photography, science fiction, and one real special woman, among other things. I am addicted to Acro and have been almost since its inception. I have also been with the CRs almost since its inception too.
