Betsy-CR-
Betsy - Birthday 1/11 Anniversary: 2/17
I was born in Raleigh, NC, but grew up in southeastern PA, with stints in California, Florida and Maryland. I graduated from Drexel University in 1980 with a degree in electrical engineering, then worked in management for Ma Bell for a number of years in Philadelphia and Northern Virginia. (A "suit" job yuck the bucks seduced me.) Moved on to my favorite-ever job, managing a flower shop/greenhouse in the Boston area.
I live in the Boston Metrowest area and spend as much time as I can with my wonderful but challenging and very active daughter Sarah (age 7, pic below). My cats Homer and Shino are oldsters, and they like to watch me Acro.
In 1998 I returned to college as a biology major. I really loved Cell Bio, Organic Chem and working with DNA and learning gene splicing techniques. I had the goal of studying medicine, but my recent health problems - Henoch-Schonlein, kidney failure, and pulmonary embolism - took me out of school for the 1999-2000 school year and kind of soured me on medicine as a profession. (I could tell you a few stories LOL.) I might go back to school, at least part-time, in the fall 2000 semester. Maybe I will go back to the part-time volunteer work I was doing with the elderly.
I have taken up Water Walking (it's a real live sport) as part of my rehabilitation. I'm writing poetry - bad haiku (occasional decent ones), quatrains, and I love the Poetry In Motion contest at www.poetry.com.
My good friends know me as a professional smartass, and I love punning. I love good puns. I love bad puns. I groan at groaners. Every once in a while I make a pun that's so bad I even make myself sick.
I enjoy reading, bicycling, walks in the woods, cuddling and reading and cooking with Sarah. I play the mini-golf courses wherever I travel. I love music and I am currently grooving to Santana's Smooth and the Supernatural album (did I say "album"? LOL); I love all musical satire including Weird Al Yankovic, Tom Lehrer and the Capital Steps. I also write similar satirical songs to well-known tunes. I'm currently reliving my rock and roll favorites from my younger days including Pink Floyd and Phil Collins but I also like Cuban dance music and Loreena McKennitt. I love the Persuasions, an a cappella group. I used to sing barbershop (Sweet Adelines) but am now working up the guts to belt out a few popular tunes at a karaoke party. I practice in the shower. Recent favorite movies: American Beauty, Small Time Crooks, and Cider House Rules. All time favorites: Red (foreign film, part of Blue, White, Red trilogy) and Tootsie and too many others to mention.
And where would I be without Acrophobia and my *CR* buds? Acrophobia has brought new friends into my life, for sure. BIG SMILE.
