| As it is always said, 'when in Rome do as the Romans do'. Okay, some of you may not want to do as the Romans do, so just a little advice , caution and tips i offer to you. | 1. It is not appropriate to be overly affectionate or amorous in public. 2. Swimming attire should not be unnecessarily revealing . ie: no thong swimwear, no topless or nude sunbathing or swimming. When visiting places of worship such as mosques, temples etc, pls observe some of the dress codes at the main entrance. Some may require men and women to be clothed to the knees and upper arms at least. Some require shoes to be removed upon entering. 3. Refrain from using profanity even when annoyed with anyone or any matter. If there is a matter of dissatisfaction, bring it up with some higher authority. 4. As there are many establishments which serve alcohol such as pubs, discos, nightclubs, and bars, refrain from being overly intoxicated that you might not be able to defend yourself or think clearly in the event of any unpleasant situation. 5. Nightlife in M'sia is relatively safe as long as you patronize nightspots which are more upscale large establishments. Inquire from the hotel concierge about places you wish to visit. Stay away from solicitors of the flesh trade.( I am not saying there are any nor am i saying there aren't) 6. Do not unnecessarily wear or carry too much valuable items on yourself. There are in-room safes in most hotels offered for your use free-of-charge. 7. Preparations-- make your hotel bookings in advance, get them in print. Contact the nearest Tourism Board of Malaysia office for free maps, catalogs or info prior to your travel. If you are travelling by Malaysia Airlines, flip thru the passenger copy of 'Going Places' available at every seat. DON'T forget to reconfirm your return flight at least 72hrs before departure. You may enlist the help of your hotel concierge. 8. Most hotels serve *'Halal' food in their restaurant outlets, though not necessarily in their chinese restaurants. Pls check with the restaurant host/hostess. Indian restaurants do not serve beef. 9. Pets strictly not allowed in all restaurants and hotels.(with the exception of Club Med- pls check) 10. Tipping is allowed though not compulsory. For bellhops and such services, RM2 or 3 minimum is reasonable depending on your baggage or the services used. * Halal- No pork allowed , and other meats to be prepared in strict order according to the teachings of the holy Quran/Koran. |

| Some more tips:- 1. When you need to visit any public washroom in shopping ctrs, pls prepare small change of about 30sen to be paid at the entrance. (most washrooms at shopping ctrs require payment but i cannot guarantee a great looking/smelling toilet). Always be prepeared with your own tissues too. 2. When visiting any home, pls remove shoes at the entrance upon entering. 3. If you are using your hands when eating at any indian/ malay restaurant, pls use only the right hand as the left is looked upon as unsanitary. 4. Since the temperature is about the same all year round, bring light airy cotton clothes (i don't mean see-thru) and sun-block (if you are planning to spend time at the beach/pool), and a light sweater/cardigan/jacket if you plan to visit the mountains as it is rather cool up there especially at night. 5. Electricity supply is in 220V, using mostly 3-pin plugs unless it is the electric shaver outlet in hotels, in which case the voltage is at 110V (2pin type). |
