August 2006
Home
August is named for the Roman Statesman Gaius Octavianus Augustus.   In  Anglo-Saxon times August 1st  was  "Lammas Day" - a holiday to welcome the harvest.

The Anglo-Saxtons called August - Arn-monath - Harvest month. We here in McMinnville love Harvest Month.  We look forward to Thursday's Market Day in Downtown McMinnville.  Many wonderful vegetables, fruits and melons, beautiful fresh tomatoes and corn - all made available at a whole block of stalls.

And now for a recipe.
This summer I have noticed about six recipes for 'Clafouti".  This must be good.  I have never made it - or - have never tasted it.
Clafouti is a traditional specialty from the Limousin district of France.  A desert of the French Country side - a puffy fruit pie, a mini souffle, a rustic pancake.

From James Beard's  "Beard on Food" -   A french dessert with the unusal name  "Clafouti and Cerises," - cerises are cherries.

James Beard's recipe:
1/2  C.        Butter
2/3  C.        Sugar
3                Whole eggs
1  C.           unsifted flour
1  Tbs.        graited orange rind
1  tsp.         vanilla
4  C.           bing or lambert cherries, tossed with 2 Tbs. sugar.

Cream butter and sugar.  Add eggs, one at a time.  Add flour, orange rind and vanilla.
Butter 9-inch cake pan or springform. (Some recipes suggest using only glass or ceramic baking dishes.)
Put some of the batter in baking dish to cover bottom, add the cherries, then pour rest of batter over the cherries.
Bake at 400 degreesl for 5 minutes.  Reduce heat to 375 degrees.  Bake until cake tests done, about 35-40 minutes.
