1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers
Coach: Bill Sharman
After a bad loss to eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks in the 1971 West Finals, Hall of Famer Bill Sharman becomes the Lakers' coach. During this magical season, the Lakers won 33 games in a row, setting an American Professional sports record. It was during this streak that Elgin Baylor retired. However, Gail Goodrich and Jerry "Mr. Clutch" West were still there. The Lakers won the Pacific Division with a 69-13 record. This would be the best NBA record until the Bulls won 72 games in the 1995-96 season.
After sweeping Chicago in the 1st round, they seeked revenge against the Bucks in the West Finals. They split up the first two games in the Forum. In the MECCA of Milwaukee, the teams split up the next two. But the Lakers won the next two to win the Western Conference Title. In the Finals, they met the New York Knicks, who beat the Lakers in 1970. Most of the 1970 Championship team was still there. The Lakers lost the opening contest, but won the next four to win their first NBA Title on the West Coast. Wilt Chamberlain was the Finals MVP.
