Expect chaos when you get off the plane. The lines for customs are long and confusing. Once you make it past there you walk into a room full of resort representatives, porters, and bus drivers yelling. In retrospect, it's probably a lot more organized than it looks. Just be sure to get a bus ticket for the return trip home and follow your bags. It takes about an hour and a half from the time the plane lands to when you will arrive at the resort.
If you leave the resort, be sure to carry lots of singles because everyone wants a tip! For instance, when we took the Dun's River Falls tour the bus driver, tour guide on the bus, tour guide at the falls, people who hold the cameras, etc. all needed to be tipped.
US dollars are excepted everywhere, but you can exchange money and get change at the resort. Depending on the exchange rate, you'll probably end up paying a little more for things in US dollars but it may be worth it not to have to deal with the exchange rate calculation.
Soon after you get to the resort check the dinner schedule. On "regular" nights there is a hot dinner buffet that wasn't so impressive. Thursday night is scheduled as a "Jamaican night" featuring local specialties. We didn't eat there that night but checked out the food. It definitely looked authentic so those of you that are brave and like to try new food should enjoy it. There is also a "beach party" night featuring jerk chicken and other good food and great music. Otherwise, there's always the Beach Grill's toasted cheese sandwich to fall back on.
The resort has 2 restaurants with sit down table service in which you choose from a limited menu. You can only eat at each once during your stay unless they have extra room. They require advanced reservations so I would make them as early as possible. The food at the Italian restaurant was excellent and the Chinese restaurant was good also.
We enjoyed the "afternoon tea" which was from 4 - 5 every day. It was a quieter section of the resort and had desserts, little sandwiches, and someone serving tea. It was a really relaxing way to end a long day on the beach.
Unfortunately Hurricane Floyd gave Jamaica a little more rain than usual when we were there last, but the weather was still pretty good. It would usually cloud over for about 2 hours, then sprinkle for about 1 - 2 hours in the later afternoon, and then clear up like nothing every happened. The mornings/early afternoons were gorgeous; definitely the best time to catch some rays.
There are about 40 people booked for the trip so far. We can't wait to see everyone there!
ATTENDEES:
When you arrive at the resort, there will be a long line for check-in and chances are your room will not be ready until 3 PM. We highly recommend grabbing a drink from the lobby bar and relaxing. If your room is not ready, after you check-in with the desk you can leave your bags (locked of course) and use the nice shower facilites to change into your suit and enjoy the pool.
