The California Physical Education-Health Project (CPEHP) is a unique professional development program for educators (K-16) associated with physical education and health education.  The CPEHP is the newest member of nine California Subject Matter Projects (CSMP), a five site statewide network of subject specific professional development programs.
The CPEHP combines the expertise of instructionally credentialled and auxilary personnel from both regional elementary  and secondary schools with university faculty to engage in the disciplines of physical education and health  through collaboration, instructional analysis and professional training.
Participants are chosen through a committee review process and are brought together to engage in the study and practice of their discipline while investigating the constructivist approach to education.
The foundation of all CPEHPs is rooted in a "Teachers teaching Teachers" model of professional development.  This foundation is designed to equip professionals with the skills and confidence for active leadership in programming, curricular development, instructional mentoring and marketing the disciplines with an intention of effectively impacting student learning.

The primary mission of the CSMPs is to improve instruction in all disciplines at all grade levels throughout California.  A secondary mission is to establish and sustain a vibrant professional culture of and for teachers, one that provides teachers with ongoing support and opportunities to address the myriad challenges of teaching in California's schools.
By improving instruction in all areas of California, The CSMPs contribute to a higher quality of education for students of all cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.  As professional development programs, the CSMPs are committed to cultivating the leadership of teachers with special expertise in teaching students of historically underrepresented groups.

The major tenets of the CPEHP are:  doing the discipline, teachers teaching teachers, teacher leadership, the teacher as a reflective practitioner and diversity and equity as a priority issue.
