Cosmos 1443 - Space Models

Below are a few of the space models I've made. Sorry about the resolution...I'll post higher-res images soon.

The Human Spaceflight Display at the Manitoba Museum - mostly built by me, with a couple of purchased models and a great backboard designed by Hans Thater. All launchers in the back row are 1/144 scale, and all spacecraft in the front row are 1/48 scale (3 times larger) to show more detail.

The Vostok booster, based on the Russian R-7 missle. This rocket carried the first human into orbit. It's built from the Apex Models kit, with little modification.

A closeup of the Mercury-Redstone model, built by me from the RealSpace Models kit.

A closeup of the Mercury-Atlas model, also from the RealSpace Models kit. I used Bare Metal Foil (aluminum) for the finish.

A closeup of the Gemini-Titan model, also from the RealSpace Models kit. I had a problem with the epoxy used to attach the Gemini capsule to the Titan...it slipped off-center while drying! Haven't fixed it yet, since I'll probably have to redo the foil and paint.

This Soyuz launcher is based on the Apex kit, but with RealSpace Models Soyuz conversion. I forgot to paint the aft end of the upper stage orange... I'll do it when I pull the models out of the case next year to upgrade the lighting.

The Saturn Ib rocket launched the first manned Apollo mission into orbit. This is an unfinished model that I just haven't had time to work on. Note the skewed escape tower... victim of gravity and sudden deceleration trauma. It's a RealSpace Models kit as well.

The giant Saturn V moon rocket, which took the first humans to the Moon and back. The main kit is from teh Revell-Monogram kit, with the upper section replaced by the RealSpace Models conversion kit for accuracy.

The Space Shuttle in 1/144, painted to represent STS-1 (Columbia). I had to rush a bit, so the tile patterns around the cockpit windows are missing. It's a Revell kit, and I used RealSpace Models decals to finish it. I also have the realSpace engines, but haven't installed them yet.

A 1/48 Mercury spacecraft, straight out of the Revell box. I've removed the hatch so people can see the astronaut inside.

The Voshkod-2 spacecraft, with the extendable airlock used for the world's first EVA (spacewalk). The model is built by Nick Proach Models.

A 1/48 Gemini spacecraft. I haven't added my New Ware decals yet, or accurized the hatches.

An early Soyuz in 1/48, partially complete. The kit is from New Ware Models, but until I make a base for it I can't attach all the little fiddly bits like radars and antennae.

A current-model Soyuz in 1/48, built by Nick Proach Models. I'm not sure what the antenna on the starboard side of the orbital module is supposed to be, but that's the way it came.

My 1/32 Revell Apollo Command and Service Module. It's out-of-scale with the others, but I haven't finished my 1/48 version yet. The LEM is also coming.

The International Space Station, based on the Intermountain Railway kit and complete as of Nov. 13/2002. I added some details from their parts enhancement kit, and scratch-built others. I used silver conductive tape on the Destiny and other U.S. modules, with the panel patterns scribed in.
