Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire                        Musings
First of all can I just say how much I ADORED this book!! Everything about it was so fantastic and the story..it just blew me away!! Here are a few musings I had when reading it for the third time....
The first chapter...how not relevant to the story was it...until the end that is! Anyway it says that Voldemort drinks the milk of a snake....what?! How the **** do you milk a snake?!! I wouldn't personally like to try it, but this brings forth other things like, where are the tits on a snake? On it's scaly belly? And exactly how much milk could you obtain from a snake that isn't even pregnant?! As far as I know, animals only produce milk when they have young to feed...so what is the deal with snakes?!? Maybe I'm thinking way into this..but that's just me!!
OK, we're still in the 1st chapter here....what is the deal with Frank (the old gardener dude) not knowing what a wizard is?!? OK, fair play he isn't one himself, but surely he's heard of the word, like we all had before the Harry Potter books came along? This brings in the idea that maybe muggles have never even heard of couldrons or spells or magic? Maybe it's just Frank being an old fuddy-duddy but I still thought it had to be mentioned!
Right, this is something that has to be cleared up. Why on EARTH are the Dursley's allowed to know about the wizarding world?! Surely they are the worst kind of muggles to keep that secret, but for some reason they do not even get told or reminded not to say anything. What if Dudley came into school one day and claimed he had a wizard for a cousin? He could easily show his friends Harry's spell books and wands and even (if he was devious enough) try and record Harry performing magic somehow. Because, fair play, none of his friends would believe him, but if they did....surely the Ministry of Magic should be keeping an eye on this?!?
Right, OK, this I think is a genuine mistake on behalf of J.K Rowling. Or maybe I've just interpreted it wrong. You know when Mr Crouch keeps calling Percy 'Weatherby' and the twins keep teasing him about it? Well, does he call him that because when Percy first told him his name he misheard and thought he said Weatherby, or is it that Crouch just doesn't care about him so much that he forgets his name? Either way Crouch HAS to know that Percy is called Weasely because Crouch knows Arthur Weasley from the Ministry and also knows that Percy is Arthur's son....Maybe Crouch is just incredibly thick and hasn't actually put two and two together...I don't know, but it all seems a bit strange to me.....
Right now I don't get this one. Why is Harry not affected by the Veela at all in Hogwarts whereas Ron and all the other boys go into a trance? Harry only gets affected at the Quidditch World Cup and the Veela are far away, yet when Fleur approaches their table Harry is not even slightly affected?! I don't understand! Is this just Rowling's way of telling us that Harry is in fact a girl?! Scary thought!
I always get really annoyed by the Age Line that Dumbledore puts around the Goblet of Fire. I mean it is sooo easy to get past it: you just either pay an older student to put your name in for you, or throw it in! It's only 10 feet to the Goblet!! Duh!!
