I finally got to meet Jimmy about 10 years ago when I was finishing my Master's Degree. I wanted to use one of his lyrics in my Thesis and needed him to sign off on a Copyright permission form. So . . . I wrote him a letter and he gladly signed the form and sent it back. I've been a Buffett fan since the 70's. In the late 70's I worked for a big company that was a contractor on the Voyage 1&2 Space probes and I've done a bunch of stuff with NASA Well..I thought it only fitting that in addition to Kurt Waldheim's "Greetings from the People of Planet Earth" gold record that our "brother aliens" . . . or whomever or whatever finds that spacecraft might get tired of hearing Waldheim' stoic greeting and Bach's Vandenberg Concerto . . .so . . . I slipped a copy of "Margaritaville" in behind the jacket/seal on the Voyager. I kept quiet about it for a long time, as I feared retribution. Voyager left our Solar System a few years ago and is now somewhere in deep space. I wrote Jimmy a letter and told him what I did . . . and we've been "cosmic buddies" ever since. He christened me his "Cosmic Buddy", because we both believe that goodness, happiness, love, 3 very important elements of the conceptual state of "Margaritaville" are certainly "Universal" and can be "tapped into" like fresh water...when one has a need to replenish. We keep in touch regularly..mostly email...but I am one of the few lucky ones to actually get a phone call from JB...because you know..."If the phone doesn't ring......(it's him")..and that's no BS..he rarely uses the phone. We are all blessed to be alive and to have Jimmy as our contemporary. He is a very gentle man, "an old softie", and a good buddy. And, now this month's story......

April 2004

Down Island

We were about 20 miles west of St. Barts when the voice on the radio said, �All maritime....All maritime....water spout reported at 40 Degrees North ....19 Minnutes West.... 30 Degrees North. Be advised...be advised�.

When I heard the alert I immediately looked at the GPS and took a new bearing. Whew! We were within a mile or so of the coordinates..so I rushed out on deck to see which way the wind was blowing...and to see if I could see anything. And sure enough...about a mile away there was a huge, green spot or tumbling, whirling water...one of the strangest things I�ve ever seen....and it was heading our way.

My wife and I were pretty upset. So, she grabbed the �Mike� for the Radio and confirmed the water spout�s coordinates to the Coast Guard (US Coast Guard, on routine patrol, issued the warning), while I brought the bow of �Tcebius� about 180 Degrees (that�s the name of our �ship�...I named it after a 1st Century BC Greco-Roman Inventor. Tcebius invented the water organ, or �clepsohydra�, and the water clock. He also invented the first mechanical water pump and was said to be a �genius�. It is written that Tcebius� work was limited only by the times in which he lived...when only wood and water existed from which Man could first make machines. The word, �Technology� comes from the name, Tcebius).

So, we put the wind at the stern of Tcebius and headed for the safe harbor of St. Barts...and the adventures awaiting us there....(Story to continue next month ).
