GRAM PARSONS

Gram Parsons Gram Parsons was an American musician who proved to be one of the most influential figures in modern music. Despite collaborating with some of the most famous musicians of the day he failed to achieve commericial success, only after his death did his legend start to grow. He was briefly a member of the Byrds and is widely credited with influencing them into a more country sound as demonstarted on their classic album Sweethearts of the Rodeo. After leaving The Byrds Gram formed The Flying Burritto Brothers and then made 2 solo albums with Emmylou Harris (then an unknown)and his band The Fallen Angels. He died in 1973 aged just 26.

His story is a classic rock n roll one, of drugs, excess, groupies, wealth and tragedy. It features some of the sixties most notorious characters(Keith Richards was Grams "drug buddy"), it features some of it's more memorable locations Altamont, The Fillmore, The Grand Ole Oprey and ended with Gram's body being stolen and burnt in the Joshua Tree desert. That is the legend.

Beyond the legend lies some of the most enduring, heartbreaking and beautiful music that anyone has ever made and a vision of something Gram called Cosmic American music. A music beyond boundaries but with strong roots in the traditional music of his forefathers. Grams vision has been carried on to this day by many performers (REM, Beck, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, The Jayhawks) all of whom acknowledge their debt to Gram.
